On the Cerro Tronador excursion, we'll explore stunning landscapes from the mountain to the Chilean border, with stops at viewpoints for photos. Highlights include Lake Gutiérrez, Lake Mascardi and its namesake village.
The tour begins along National Route 258, skirting Lake Gutiérrez (with views of Cerro Catedral) and then Lake Mascardi. We detour onto gravel Route 254 to Manso River Bridge, visiting Los Alerces Waterfall.
We continue to a natural viewpoint for photos, passing Tronador Hotel (open in summer) with panoramic mountain views. After crossing Los Césares stream, we travel 15 km through Upper Manso River Valley to Pampa Linda (restaurants, campground) for lunch.
In the afternoon, we visit the viewpoint of Manso Glacier (Ventisquero Negro), observing its sediment-colored glacial tongue. Cerro Tronador gets its name from the thunder-like sound of ice calving.
On the mountain's eastern face, we'll see Devil's Throat (Garganta del Diablo), a natural amphitheater with meltwater waterfalls. Finally, we return to Bariloche via the same route.
