Northwest Argentina

A Journey of Color and Tradition

Northwest Argentina (NOA) is a land where time seems to slow down. Spanning the provinces of Salta and Jujuy, this region is a breathtaking tapestry of high-altitude deserts, multi-hued mountains, and deep-rooted Andean traditions. It is the soul of the country, where colonial architecture meets indigenous heritage. From the vibrant folklore of Salta City to the surreal silence of the salt flats and the ancient villages of the Quebrada, the Northwest offers a profound, sensory journey through Argentina’s most authentic landscapes.

Travel Essentials

Climate

Expect high thermal amplitude. Even on warm days (77°F / 25°C), temperatures drop sharply at night in the high altitude (40°F / 5°C). Always pack layers.

Some highlights reach over 12,000 feet. We recommend a slow pace and staying hydrated to acclimate comfortably to the "Puna" (highlands).

Best time to visit

March to November. These months offer dry, sunny days. Summer (Dec-Feb) is the rainy season, which can occasionally affect mountain roads.

Duration

Stay at least 4 to 5 nights to cover the Salta-Jujuy loop. Add more if you plan to continue south to the wine regions.

Must-See Experiences (The Best of Salta & Jujuy)

  • The Humahuaca Gorge (Jujuy): A UNESCO World Heritage site where mountains like the "Hill of Seven Colors" in Purmamarca provide a stunning, natural backdrop to ancient villages and artisan markets.

  • Salinas Grandes (Jujuy/Salta): Step onto a blindingly white sea of salt located 11,000 feet above sea level. This vast expanse is one of the most photographed wonders in South America.

  • Salta’s Colonial Heart: Explore Argentina’s best-preserved colonial city. Visit the historic Cathedral and the MAAM Museum to see the world-renowned Inca mummies.

  • The Lipán Slope (Cuesta del Lipán): A masterpiece of road engineering that zigzags up the mountains, offering dizzying views as you climb toward the Altiplano.

  • Peñas & Gastronomy: Spend an evening at a local Peña in Salta, where live folk music and authentic empanadas salteñas create an atmosphere of pure joy.
